About

Jesse Ozar is a Los Angeles oil painter. His series Decay and Bloom (2015–2024) is a body of work about one thing being absorbed into another. A skull — the last permanent thing a body leaves behind — overtaken by flowers and growth. Not replaced. Integrated.

The series developed over nine years: Fracture (2015), three successive Skull + Flower paintings (2016–2018), and Subsume (2024), a 74 × 46 in oil on linen that completes the arc at a larger scale and in a different medium from the earlier wood-panel works.

Ozar works in oil, building restrained, near-quiet images with something unstable underneath them. As he puts it: "It's that space where something looks quiet but isn't."

Statement — Decay and Bloom

Decay and Bloom is a body of work about one thing being absorbed into another. A skull — the last permanent thing a body leaves behind — overtaken by flowers and growth. Not replaced. Integrated.

I am interested in images that can hold beauty and damage at the same time. It's that space where something looks quiet but isn't.
